The Dirham Masjid series pay homage to notable mosques around the world, as the mosque is universally understood in the Muslim world as a place to congregate for prayer and as a community centre. Today, we will be looking at the Masjid Al-Haram 1 Dirham Silver Coin 2017 by Nubex.
MASJID AL-HARAM 1 DIRHAM SILVER COIN 2017 BY NUBEX – A BRIEF HISTORY
Before we continue, it is important to note that Nubex had 2 separate runs of the Masjid series, the first being in 2015. While the products did relatively well, the creative minds behind Nubex’s design team thought that the series can be improved.
Thus, in 2017, the Dirham Masjid series received a design makeover, particularly on the tagcard design, as well a revision to the Kufi inscription on the reverse side of the coin.
The second run of the Dirham Masjid series utilizes watercolour-inspired digital artwork, making use of colours associated with the actual physical buildings of the mosques featured. This gives the new design a more realistic representation and feel.
A notable architectural landmark even to non-Muslims, the Masjid-Al Haram is a familiar staple in Islamic media and culture. Not only does it surround the Kaabah – the cubic structure draped in black and gold which all Muslims point their Qiblat and prayers towards, it is also the holy site for one of the five pillars of Islam, the Hajj pilgrimage.
It is here that billions of Muslims around the world congregate to perform the Hajj and Umrah rituals, as it features other significant sites within its walls including the Hajar Al Aswad (the black stone), the Zamzam well (an underground water source with history tied to the prophet Ismail), the tomb of the prophet Ibrahim, as well as the hills of Safa and Marwa.
